High-dynamic-range (HDR) imaging, accompanied by wide colour gamut (WCG), offers viewers brighter brights and darker darks, with more shades of grey in between, as well as reds, greens, and blues of unprecedented saturation and richness. New standards are needed for the video signals that historically have represented standard dynamic range (SDR) images; these new signal standards now allow video signals to represent the stunning HDR images that can be created, distributed, and displayed. The Perceptual Quantizer (PQ) system and the Hybrid-Log-Gamma (HLG) system are two methods leading the way for HD/UHD HDR content creation, and both systems enable viewing across various screens and viewing environments.
